Use of Social Media by Your Employees: Legal and Disciplinary Issues

Katherine Poirier, CRHA – Attorney and Associate, Borden Ladner Gervais S.E.N.C.R.L., S.R.L.

Justine B. Laurier - Attorney, Borden Ladner Gervais S.E.N.C.R.L., S.R.L.

The use of social media by your employees can have an adverse effect on your company’s image and reputation. The speakers will discuss methods of monitoring the use of social media by your employees, thereby avoiding associated risks. They will also explore ways to limit such use outside the workplace or when employees work on devices other than those provided by the employer. Managing social media in the Web 2.0 era also raises many questions: do your employees have an expectation of privacy on the Internet? What is the legitimacy and evidential value of information found through the use of social media? What kind of measures can the employer apply in case of abuse by an employee? The conference will be illustrated by current legal actions on this matter.

In order to improve the content of the conference, you are invited to submit specific questions that you would like to discuss during the meeting.  They will be forwarded to the speakers and integrated into their preparatory work.
