Mintzberg and 70-20-10 model for development and change

Phil LeNir will introduce the approach and framework to leadership development and change created by Henry Mintzberg, Montreal’s most famous management and business guru. Mintzberg’s approach is based on experiential learning and his framework is based on managerial mindsets. These form the basis for a number of university programs, including the top rated McGill-HEC EMBA (rated within the top 30 across the entire world).

In this approach there are no lectures, and no disconnect from the workplace: managers develop collaboratively in small groups during 90 minute sessions using themed discussion guides authored by world renown management and business thinkers.

The 70-20-10 model for learning development was first articulated by the Center of Creative Leadership. It has been adopted by a majority of large organizations around the world.  70-20-10 is based on observational studies that "Lessons learned by successful and effective managers are roughly: 70% from experience, 20% from people, 10% from course and reading"

Used together these provide L&OD practitioners with new tools and methodologies to deliver the (co-)development programs that result in greater organizational flexibility, knowledge across the organization, and strengthening of culture.

This conference will be divided into a presentation, a workshop in which participants use Mintzberg’s approach, and a discussion and question period.

Phil LeNir is president of CoachingOurselves. Co-Founded with Henry Mintzberg they provide leadership development tools through which managers improve their practice of management. They are used by over 10,000 managers in 8 languages around the world.
